Improving your Photos tip #2 (closeups)

I’ve seen a lot of blurry images from holding the camera on the phone too close to the subject. This also happens with point and shoot cameras. Not so much with folks taking photos with DSLRs, mainly because people that use DSLRs are aware of this, but it still happens.

The reason for this (older cell phones in particular) is because the standard cell phone and point and shoot camera lens depth of field starting at about 8” (20cm). Anything closer than this distance is going to be blurry.

Most newer phones and almost all point and shoots have a setting with an image of a flower. This is called the ‘macro’ setting and by selecting this setting, you can take very close up photos with the image being clear and crisp.

The other option is to stand farther back than 8” and zoom in, but zooming in introduces another issue that can also cause the image results to be blurry known as ‘camera shake’ which I will discuss in tip 3.

Hope this is helpful!
